Delayed But Not Denied

“The dog in the kennel barks at his fleas,
The dog that hunts does not feel them.”
Chinese Proverb

Have you noticed that people who are actively engage in pursuing their passion are seldom distracted by the little thorns of life? On Saturday my son flew from West Palm Beach to New Jersey. This is the beginning of his summer vacation and he was excited about spending time with his grandmother and cousins. He had a connecting flight in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon his arrival in Charlotte, his connecting flight was delayed for twelve hours. He periodically texted me (have you notice that kids don’t talk anymore, they text?) to let me know the status of his flight.

After nine hours of waiting he called and said, “OK dad, I’m on the plane and we’re about to take off.”

“Great! Hit me when you get to Newark.”

Two hours later, another text, “Still here dad, we haven’t left as yet.”

I called him, “What’s the delay little man?”

“They’re saying it’s the weather”

“Are you ok, are you hungry?”

“No, I ate and my Ipod is fully charged, I’m good.”

“What the mood on the plane?”

“Oh dad, everyone is bent out of shape, it seems as if I’m the only one that’s not in a rush.”

“You know I’m really proud of you…”

“Why is that?”

“Because you don’t really sweat the small stuff, if something happens and you can’t change it, you just roll with it…I like that about you. Why aren’t you trippin’ like everyone else?”

He answered:

“This delay doesn’t change my plans, I’m still going to get to Jersey and I’m still going to have fun all summer!”

Enough said.

He was so focused on the end results that he didn’t notice the minor distractions. His focus was on the fun time he’ll have once he arrives at his destination. What a novel idea, focus on the end result and enjoy the ride. Don’t worry about the price of gas, focus on the fact that you’re wealthy enough to own a car. Always focus on the end result that you want to achieve, remember, state of mind determines state of affairs. Everything is a lesson, so how do you choose to learn, in joy or in pain?

Much Love,
