No Need To Miss Your Flight (Part II)
Now let’s get back to the airport and the business of baggage. Usually when we take a trip, be it business or pleasure, our luggage is actually something that we want to take with us. Be it that favorite business suit, your most comfortable pair of slacks or your best pair of shoes. So for this analogy, let’s look at luggage in a more positive light. Let’s assume that the luggage that you wanted to take with you are your dreams, your goals, your ideals, in short your most intimate desires.
Prior to September 11th 2001 there were three questions that you had to answer correctly regarding your luggage (dreams) before you would be cleared to head to your destination.
If you answered the question incorrectly, you would be delayed and sometimes even denied. Question number one: Did you pack your luggage yourself?
In other words, are these your dreams? The place that you’re trying to get to, is that your vision or is this what society told you that you ought to be? Because if you didn’t pack your bags yourself, at some point you’ll open them up and find that this is not what you wanted to bring along. These shoes (career, relationship ect.) don’t fit. So now you have to re-pack and once again, you’re delayed and could quite possibly be denied. Are you in this relationship and planning to get married because this is what your heart and soul is telling you to do? Or are you trying to fulfill your parent’s dreams of having grand children before they die?
My dad and all of his brothers are mechanics. When I turned seventeen, he wanted to teach me the trade and was very upset when I told him that I had no interest in learning how to fix cars. He insisted that everyone needed to know how to fix a car and inquired what would I do if my car broke down? How would I know if the mechanics were ripping me off? I assured him that my car would never break down, after all I intended to be rich and all the broken down cars that I ever saw were owned by poor people. If I had an emergency on the side of the highway I would simply call AAA to come get the car and a limousine service to get me. Besides, I’m a Scorpio, my hands are for caressing and making love, not fondling some greasy engine! God did not call me to repeat someone else’s success. He said, “I will do a new thing in you.” I don’t believe that I was created so that my dad could live vicariously through me. Call me crazy, but I believe that I am here for something more. Later in life I found out that my dad wanted to be a musician, but by then he had a wife and kids so he chose to do something more ‘practical’. No wonder he was always so irritable and angry! I will do practical things in the grave, but while I’m living, I dare to be an uncommon man.
Even though I was raised in Jamaica where reggae music dominated the air waves, the words of Frank Sinatra resonated with my soul. In one of his ballads he was reflecting on his life, and though he made some mistakes along the way, he found comfort in the fact that he did it his way. He was willing to take full responsibility for all that he had encountered and all the he had become. He stood tall and faced it all and did it his way. In my opinion, doing it your way is the only way to do it. Doing it someone else’s way is the way of the sheep, and sheep were created for one purpose and one purpose only; that is to be slaughtered. Don’t be a sheep, do it your way, without hesitation or reservation, do it boldly, do it beautifully, do it without apology!
Second question: Have your bags been in your possession the entire time? To rephrase the question: Have your luggage been out of your sight? Have you taken your eyes off your dreams? Have you been diligent with your dreams? If you’ve taken your eyes off your luggage (dreams) and start looking at someone else’s you will be delayed. If you start thinking that I love being a clown but med school will give me more security, you’ve just taken your eyes off your luggage. The reason why this question is extremely important is that if you’ve taken your eyes off your luggage, (dreams) you could quite possibly endanger the lives of the pilot and everyone else on the aircraft.
If you’ve taken your eyes off your dreams, you will be left with a void in your soul. Whatever you use to fill that void, will not bring you any joy, only the dream can fill that void. So now you’re a physician with your own private practice, however it’s no fun. You’re not very attentive to your patients, you will do just the minimum to get by, you will have no interest in doing further research and staying abreast of the new developments in medicine and treatments. This lack of passion will affect your patients and it will eventually spill over into your relationships. It will ultimately affect every area of your life and those who are involved with you. Be sure not to lose sight of your luggage.
Third question: Has any unknown person asked you to take anything aboard? The key word in this question is ‘unknown.’ What have you picked up subconsciously? Are you receiving messages from the media, friends and relatives that subconsciously dissuade you from pursuing your career as a clown? How often do you check to make sure that your thoughts and ideas are your own? Do you dislike people of another race or nationality because you were told that this is the patriotic thing to do? Did somehow, along the way you picked up a program that gave you the impression that being a doctor is more prestigious than being a clown. Do you have a program running, instructing you that it is better to find a spouse in your ethnic group that you have no feelings for than to marry someone outside your race that you’re absolutely in love with?
All these issues must be addressed if it is your desire to navigate your own course. In the book of Romans we are reminded not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Don’t be so quick to accept the programs that are given to you. If you want the results that everyone is experiencing, then do the things that everyone is doing. Think the popular and accepted thoughts of the world. The only way to make your mark is to renew your mind with some better information. Renew your mind with truth. All human beings regardless of race, creed, or culture are 99.9% similar in genetic structure. Never fall victim to the thinking that tells us that .1% difference far out weighs the 99.9% similarity. Renew your mind, get on board and let’s go. A wonderful life awaits.
