I Must Become That Which I Say I Am

Life Lesson 101:

A few months ago I was watching an episode of, ‘The Apprentice’, Donald had the group in the boardroom to discuss the day’s event. He asked a certain young man (who incidentally was not in jeopardy of being fired) a question, and the lad jokingly responded, “I’m not good with any of that, you know, I’M WHITE TRASH.” The ‘Donald’ fired him on the spot.

I believe that successful people understand (be it consciously or sub consciously) something that the average Joe doesn’t. Trump knew that words eventually manifest and even though the young man was joking, Trump (I believe) also understood that the subconscious mind (which causes our words to manifest) cannot distinguish between an ironic musing and absolute fact! People who have achieved some degree of mastery over their lives understand that the two most powerful words in the Universe are: I AM.
Whatever you attach to them…you become.

So here’s the lesson for today, please repeat after me: I MUST BECOME THAT WHICH I SAY I AM. Once more: I MUST BECOME THAT WHICH I SAY I AM.

The bible puts it this way, “Thou shall decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee.” I stumbled unto this Law by accident at age nineteen. Back then I wasn’t the ridiculously sexy Kirk Nugent that you’ve come to love. (or so I thought)

I was nineteen, suffering from low self esteem and a major identity crisis. I saw myself as unwanted and unattractive. (This is what I told myself internally; on the outside I wore a mask of confidence…like most people do.) I lacked the ability to hold on to anything good in my life because I felt so undeserving. I was working as a salesman in an electronic chain (pretty much like a Best Buy type situation) and I was instructed by the manager that whenever the phone rang, the proper etiquette was to thank the caller for calling, state your department, ‘identify’ yourself, then assist the caller.

So one day the phone rang, and as a goof I answered, “Thank you for calling Appliance City, Electronics department, this is ‘The Good Looking Black Man,’ how may I help you?”
The lady on the other end laughed and curiously asked, ‘Who is this?”
“The good looking black man, how may I help you?”

As I made that declaration, the manager was walking by, overheard me, smiled, shook his head and went on about his merry business.
The caller inquired, “Well, Mr. Good looking black man, I need a CD player can you help me with that?”
“Sure, just come on in and ask for the good looking black man.”

So she did. She marched straight up to the manager and announced,
“I’m here to see the good looking black man”

He replied, “You must be talking about Kirk Nugent, he’s in electronics.”
She proceeded to the electronics department and seeing me (the only black person in the department) she declared, “You MUST be the good looking black man”

“Indeed I am! Flesh and blood did not reveal this to you but my Father which is in Heaven.”
We both had a good laugh; she bought a CD player and was on her way.

I had such a great time with her that I kept on answering the phone as the good looking black man, and customers kept coming in asking for the good looking black man, and as always they were directed to see Kirk Nugent, for indeed he is the good looking black man.

I was answering the phones thirty, maybe forty times per day, six days a week,
constantly referring to myself as the good looking black man, constantly having customers, fellow employees and managers all referring to me as the good looking black man.

About three months later, I walked by the mirror and the reflection in the mirror WAS NOT ME. It was DENZEL! Denzel Washington…I HAD BECOME THE GOOD LOOKING BLACK MAN!

I must become that which I say I am! Thou shall decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee.

Here’s the million dollar question: What have you been decreeing in your life?

With Great Love,

Kirk Nugent
